Subject Matter DefinitionMathematics education will pursue multiple areas of expertise for the success of the student learner. These areas include problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, representation, and connections (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics). Further areas for continued success for the math student include adaptive reasoning, strategic competence, conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and productive disposition (National Research Council).
